The tech industry is feeling the aftershock of The Great Resignation, as 4.5% of the employees in the industry quit their jobs. But tech job openings are also at an all-time high because of the overwhelming demand in many specialties. A recent study by Stack Overflow shows what software developers consider now essential to be happy at work, why they quit, and where they are most comfortable working.
The report shows that, at the end of 2021, nearly 80% of developers were not looking for a new job. The focal discovery of the more than 350 interviews was that most developers are happy at their current position (70%). The vast majority (90%) stated that it was important to be happy at work.
Money matters
Stack Overflow found that the most important reason for being happy at work is directly tied to salary (60%). Work-life balance (58%), flexibility (52%), and productivity (52%) also were mentioned by more than half of the people surveyed. In contrast, feeling unproductive at work was the number one reason developers feel unhappy with their current position (45%), followed by not having a work-life balance (39%) and feeling they don’t have opportunities to grow within their current employer.
“Feeling productive at work plays a much more critical role in team happiness than we probably realize. It shouldn’t be as surprising as it is (…) hitting roadblocks at work just because you’re not sure where to find answers is incredibly frustrating,” said Matt Kiernander of Stack Overflow.
A quiet place
With the shift to fully remote in most comp
anies because of the pandemic, researchers can now focus on the ideal conditions for developers to unlock their productivity. For example, 45% of them believe it is at home, with windows nearby, quiet surroundings, bright natural light, and plants. 27% of developers need either an office building or having people around to do the most at work, but greenhouse environments have the upper hand. Now recruiters will need to incorporate multiple options in a new work environment that is here to stay.
