The last two years have taught us that remote work can get the job done. As the COVID-19 pandemic forced everyone to work from home, most companies made the necessary changes to adapt. The result has benefited both organizations and employees, as productivity increased and workers have reported feeling happier and healthier. GitLab found a 52% increase in remote worker productivity, according to its global survey of 3,900 professionals, with a 44% increase in employee morale, 43% improvement in employee retention, and a 19% increase in inclusion.
“Remote work has become, what economists call, a general-purpose technology,” says Adam Ozimek, chief economist for Upwork labor market platform. “It has a wide range of uses that is accepted throughout the economy and creates a variety of indirect effects, and we are already seeing the signs of these effects.”
The most important of these effects has been that many workers have decided not to come back to the office. The Great Resignation, a movement of employees who have quit their 9-to-5 jobs, is gaining traction worldwide because people want to work remotely and enjoy a better work-life balance.
Remote freelancers give companies more flexibility and a larger talent pool.
The rise of remote work is giving organizations a diverse talent pool with the flexibility to hire the best people suitable for a given project without restrictions in recruiting efforts. As a result, companies can ensure they hire the most suitable talents, no matter where they are in the world.
“The adoption of a more completely remote workforce has allowed companies to embrace new technologies, reimagine how they get on board and train, and has even allowed hiring managers to embrace the use of freelancers,” says Ozimek.
And the demand for remote freelancers is likely to rise, given the current skills shortage, especially in the tech sector, with 54% of organizations experiencing a tech skills shortage, according to Statista.
Freelance Developers: what they bring to the table
According to Isabel Nyo, a career consultant for Fortune 500 companies, freelance developers bring a desirable set of skills to hiring companies based on working projects. Among them is access to skills across different languages and niches, from iOS development to eCommerce.
Nyo also points out that freelance developers are more readily available and, getting paid a higher wage, are more engaged in their projects, leading to higher productivity rates. Remote work also helps developers strengthen their soft skills -communication, teamwork, assertiveness- something the tech sector has been behind the curve since its inception.
